DAY 5 - Motorkana Denpasaar
But here we go for the Day 5 "Morning Run"
.......
After a night of recovery the crew were up and ready for "MOTORKANA DENPASAR"
Flag down was 8.00am "Just in time for peak period" Andretti said with a smile
"Get in, hold on and shut up" he said and with that the rally .....continued
A full throttle start was called for but because of a fuel mishap the Premium fuel
was not added to the Jimny (mainly because it bloody hard to find !) and instead of
a 6000rpm "Launch" a gentle roll out was achieved.
Due to the power problem in the Jimny , momentum had to be maintained or a time
penalty may occur
( What the Marshal really said was, "Ignore the red lights Andretti" and with the
permanent smile, by now well known around Kuta, the horn was applied (Just like a local)
they hit "Imam Benjoi" (the Denpasaar road) at a frightening 40kph with the horn blasting
and wound it up to a bone shaking 60kph in a few closed sections all the way to the center of town.
After a nasty run up a wrong way street , much to the amusement of the locals Andretti decided
to miss a section "Bugger the points" and head straight to Matahari for the roof top parking section,
which in the past has caused much finger waving by the "Parkir" only to find it empty.
"Its time for a map" Andretti said "Bloody Navigator..his fault"....and the latest, and very
flash UBD style "Street Atlas of Bali" was purchased for 160,000rp. A must for the future
ralliers out there that may be thinking of joining the next "BALI RALLY".
(Hhmm .. Guess the Rome Central Tourist Map didn't work .. was OK for me a few months ago in Europe .. Nav)
With a Night section scheduled for tonight it was decided to take a "Well known village short cut"
back to Kuta "What village is this ?" was the query from the co-pilots seat, "Don't bloody Know"
was the reply. So it was then that the map was torn from its protective cover.
"Where are we?" again from the marshal .. it was then that the book was thrown in the rear seat.
"Bugger".... A number of streets, followed by Gangs followed by rice paddies were traversed only
to find Andretti leaning out the window with his best Indo "Di Mana Kuta???".
By the time the crew returned to Kuta, it was Bintang time at what shall be a favorite of
future ralliers the INDO-NATIONAL Bar & Restaurant in Kuta just around the corner from the
Padma in Sahadewa Street.
Their hosts Kerry and Milton unknowingly supplied the coldest Bintangs (Dam Cold) on the Island.
(apologies Harry ... they must have a new Fridge !)
,
Andretti and the Marshal followed the Bintangs
with the most succulent sate around with a traditional Nasi Goreng ..... Fabulous.
All Andretti could say was "The bugger didn't recognize me" but they where looked after by the
lovely Ayu and efficient Made. The bar is covered in murals of Sydney and has a daily special
menu with a average price around A$6.00 and a full a-la-cart menu to tempt even the fussiest of
us, and damn cold beer especially at happy "Hour" from 4.00 till 7.00 when the prices are only
9,000rp lge and 6000rp sml
The crew will definitely return to this spot, but with a hectic night section planed a
"Little lie down" is the order for the early arvo then maybe a "Dam cold" Bintang back at
the Indo National.

Day 5 Supplement - The Night Info
The evening Quiet was shattered by the sound of the Race Jimny's arrival at
the Bali Cyber to take the Hostage and his minder (Nina) off for a lovely Indian
Dinner at the GOI (Gateway of India) on Gado Gado road.
This decision may have major consequences tomorrow in the Jimny, as to whether
the windows stay up.... we will see ..... lucky we don't have "Smell-A-Web".
The crew have always enjoyed their Indian at GOI and with entree, main course
and a number of beers for the four. The total bill was only AU$50 a Bargain !
The crew returned to the job of checking out the night spots at about 10.45pm
starting on Gado Gado Rd.
There are many new and very flash Bars and Restaurants along this strip including
SPACE BAR (Latest & Flashiest) .... JPs .... SPY BAR ...... Q BAR (caters for a
different crowd) SANTA FE (with a great upstairs wine bar) .... IN CAFE ....
LIQUID BAR......Abar (Absolute Vodka) and a new Ozzie one...The Bush Telegraph.
The training of the Marshall was going well until the Q BAR when things just went
pear shaped and a confused exit was called for, which was easy because the Marshal
by this time very confused.
(Ed's Note. Andretti has always been a sort after item at Q Bar .. ya Great Big Hunk !)
The only thing that was noticeable throughout was the distinct lack of patrons
even in the regular bars and eateries.
A rip through Legian and Kuta revealed the same even at the old haunts of Bounty
and Bali Rock.....Its like the Bali of the early 80s, still with the smiling faces
of the people but with a lack of visitors.
The visitors that are in Bali at the moment seem to be mostly people that have been
here before September 2002 and have returned in good faith.
The crews travels so far have covered some of the old tourist spots and touched
on a number of new ones, and in the course of rally have found a great deal of on
road check points with the Polisi Giving a smile and waving us through.
"Where is the fun in that" asked Andretti "No Tax .. No Cigarette Money"......
the Marshal replied "I remember it like this in the 80s..old Bali"
"Cut the crap Marshal, lets check this out"......It was off to the Tourist Polisi
to get the low down on what it takes to get into trouble.
There is a Tourist Polisi post by the beach next to the SAHID Hotel not far from
Poppies Gang II and another at Kuta Square.
The boys informed us that the Governors Directive is to leave the Tourists alone
unless they are doing something very illegal and at no time will a bribe be accepted.
If you have a problem with a officer just remember their name and come to the tourist
Polisi, and the report will be fully investigated and action taken.
Andretti was heard to mutter "Bugger, there goes the high speed chases
