Day 1 - Legian to Negara

The Run to the Mysterious West .....

All Rally vehicles were marshaled to the Bali@Cyber Cafe car park by 08.30 for a 09.00 LeMans start at 09.00
A total of 6 cars including the Escort vehicle



At 08.59 it was noticed that car 1 was actually blocking the driveway, but with only 1 minute to go and
both Jl Werkudara (Rum Jungle Rd) and Jl Legian held up by the Polisi Escort for the flag off it was to
late for him to be moved.
A strategic move by on Andretti as he casually walked to car 1 amidst the sound of many horns and sirens
(Andretti got them again)

Much squealing of tyres was heard with only the sound of the Navigator screaming "Left you barstard" as the
cars swung into Jl legian for the beginning of the "Great Race".



Second position was Jim and Sue closely pursued by Team Cracker (No Rae and only 2 Kids) with a unusually
light load. Then Mr & Mrs Hostage and team Pacung David and Moira (Taking it easy in the flash "New"
rally Daihatsu)

Now we have all driven the streets of Kuta, Legian and alike and a speed of 50kph is considered a little
excessive but with Team Ones "Rubber Chicken" (Carefully attached to the grill of the Feroza) looming
large in the rear view mirror of the Polisi escort at near terminal velocity of 75 kph was struck and held
for most of Day 1

A small pit stop was required along the way to enable several crew members to pick up
supplies etc for the trip. Parking was not really a problem ... we just stopped wherever
we wanted to .. in actual fact it was right in the middle of a major street .. no problem



Our friendly escorts made sure the traffic was duly directed around the New Hazard ..

Many a passing maneuver was tried but 2 where larger than life, the first being the overtaking of the
Polisi escort by Team 1, 20 minutes into the race which did incur a time penalty, and the second being
the overtaking of Team 1 by Team Cracker a few minutes after that.

This maneuver had never been seen before in Bali Rally history, earning the scorn of Andretti and earning
Team Cracker the first award of the Rally - "the Pink Finger award".



We noticed no traffic problems at all for the first day of the race, what with lights, sirens and Polisi and
there 2 way radios, all traffic at all major intersections along the route had been moved out of the way.

This is the only way to Rally around Bali Andretti was heard to say.

All cars made it to Medewi beach resort for the end of day 1 and a triumphant win to Team 1.



After booking in to this flash and tidy hotel in Medewi there was time to reflect. Plenty of time in
fact as the Pool Bar service was less than exciting .... it did not exist !
After some fast improvisation ... the esky and ice was called for ... all was now back on track



The evening Jimny-Kana did not go to plan as expected (some nobbling of the vehicles is suspected)
and it was decided that the following days maneuvers would decide who would win the much coveted award.

A 3 minute time penalty awarded to Andretti that would see him resume the race the next day at the
rear of the field.
